PROGRAM

Hallelujah Junction

Choreography by Ja’ Malik
Music by John Adams

The music centers around delayed repetition between two pianos, creating a sonorous echo effect. While there is a constant shifting of pulse and meter, the music remains rooted in the natural rhythm of the four-syllable word, “hal-le-LU-jah”. “Hallelujah Junction” is Artistic Director Ja’ Malik’s sixth work for the Madison Ballet company. This new ballet will feature the physically emotional choreography that audiences have come to expect, and the ensemble of nine dancers will evoke the timeless technique of classical ballet in a contemporary setting.

Agapé

Choreography by Ja’ Malik
Music by Nicholas Britell

This emotionally charged work reimagines the timeless concept of the Pas De Deux, or dance for two. The Pas De Deux, which is traditionally performed between a male dancer and ballerina, is altered by having two men dance together.

“[This work] is about humanity. Despite featuring two men, the story is genderless. I am more interested in answering the question; how do we respect, love, and support each other in this journey of life regardless of race, sex, religion and all the other labels we put on people? It’s quite simple to me. Respect, love, compassion, and empathy are the answers, and I hope this Pas De Deux represents that through our unspoken language of movement.” - Ja’ Malik

Giselle (Act II)

Choreography by Ja’ Malik,
after Jean Coralli and Jules Perot
Music by Adolphe Adam

Giselle, a beautiful young village girl, has died of heartbreak and been buried in a moonlit forest. Spirits of women who have been betrayed by men called the Wilis, led by their Queen Myrtha, haunt this forest and take their revenge by forcing men to dance until they die of exhaustion. Two men who loved Giselle visit her grave to grieve: Hilarion, a rough local villager, and Albrecht, a royal duke. Giselle rises from the grave to guide Albrecht to safety, ultimately leading to the Wilis entrancing Hilarion to his death. Still in the forest, Albrecht is caught by the spirits but Giselle pleads on his behalf to Myrtha to spare his life. Giselle proves through forgiveness that a powerful love can diminish the hatred and vengance of Myrtha. Albrecht survives until sun rise, when Myrtha and the Wilis dissipate, returning Giselle to her grave to rest in peace.
