Madison Ballet’s ‘Mozart & More’ breaks out of the box

“Fog and lightning set a hauntingly beautiful scene at Madison Ballet’s “Mozart and More,” now running in MYArts’ Starlight Theater. Dancers reveal themselves and enter from unexpected places, as the box of the proscenium magically unfolds to reveal a live string quartet.

This scene is part of “The Hour Before,” a work that brought Madison Ballet’s artistic director Ja’ Malik national attention as a choreographer. This piece demonstrates the athletic prowess of the company’s dancers, who have been pushed and given space to grow in new directions, and gives insight into Ja’Malik’s intention to challenge ballet expectations.”
